Container Cargo grows by 16%, approaching 2 million TEUs
2024 marks the best year ever for the Port of Sines in terms of Container Cargo, with a sustained year-on-year growth of 16%, corresponding to a total handling of 1.9 million TEUs (1 TEU = 1 twenty-foot container).
In terms of overall cargo volume, Sines recorded 47.8 million tons, 11% more than the total registered in 2023. The Container Terminal led the handling figures with 23 million tons, followed by the Liquid Bulk Terminal with 20.8 million tons.
Over the past decade, the Container Terminal at Sines has shown steady growth, registering a positive variation of 14.7% between 2014 and 2024. On the international stage, Sines achieved a spot in the European TOP15 in 2021 and has since reinforced its position, ranking 14th in 2024. Additionally, in the first half of 2024, Sines stood out as the European port with the highest growth rate, recording a year-on-year variation of 25%.
With more than twenty regular, weekly, and bi-weekly services connecting it to key international markets, the Sines Container Terminal offers high levels of connectivity and operational efficiency to Iberian importers and exporters.
It is also worth noting that the terminal's expansion plan is still underway. By 2028, the Port of Sines will have an installed capacity of 4.1 million TEUs. This expansion is complemented by significant improvements implemented by the Portuguese Government in rail infrastructure, enhancing connections to the Spanish market and boosting Sines’ penetration into the Iberian hinterland.
