The Port of Sines has climbed three positions in the World Top 100, reaching the 95th place of the "World Top Container Ports 2022", published by "Container Management". Also noteworthy is the reference to Sines as one of the European ports achieving a double-digit growth.

2021 was the best year ever for the Sines Container Terminal, with the total throughput surpassing 1.8 million TEU, thus corresponding to a year-on-year growth of 13%, allowing it to climb three positions in the international ranking.

The expansion works aiming at doubling the handling capacity of the Container Terminal (Terminal XXI) to 4.1 million TEU are well underway, with the first stage, which includes 204 meters of additional quay length, having been completed in June. Since the terminal currently offers the capacity to handle three megacarriers simultaneously, annual throughput is expected to increase. Once the expansion works are concluded, totaling a private investment of 660.9 million Euros by PSA Sines, the terminal concessionaire, the handling of four Megacarriers, simultaneously, will be possible.

While railway operations are expected to increase, PSA and the Port of Sines Authority have been promoting the construction and improvement of rail access to the terminal. The Portuguese Government is also working to strengthen the existing railway link between Sines and the Spanish border, which will enable the port to serve Iberian importers and exporters more efficiently.

One of the main goals of the port's Strategic Plan for the next ten years is to capture 8% of the Iberian market, thus doubling its share of traffic to and from the hinterland.
