Portimão Cruise Terminal continued to grow in 2018, having received 36.786 passengers, corresponding to 23% over 2017. Even though there was a slight decrease in the number of calls (five calls less than in 2017), the 66 cruise vessels calling Portimão in 2018 were bigger, thus contributing to an increase of 14,7% on the total GT.
In what concerns ferry traffic, we must enhance the restart of the line between Portimão and Madeira Island (Funchal), with twelve calls in 2018, which corresponded to a total of 10.607 passengers.
Under the management of APS – Port of Sines Authority since 2014, Portimão has grown 151% since that year, in what concerns the number of passengers. Being the unique Cruise Terminal in the Algarve region, it has been benefiting by a series of considerable improvements, whether on infrastructures, IT systems and marketing under the responsibility of the Port Authority. In harmony with the endeavour, the region’s economic and touristic players have been developing an important promotion strategy of both the city of Portimão and the Algarve brand, which is worldwide acknowledged.
Integrated in the joint promotion of the national ports, under the brand Cruise Portugal, the Port of Portimão will attend the major international cruise industry venue – the Seatrade Cruise Global, which will take place in Miami during next April.
