2017 Alphaliner index registers the rising of three places over the previous year
In the year in which, for the first time, containerized cargo took over the first place in what regards volumes of cargo handled at the Port of Sines, Alphaliner’s Top-100 Container Terminals places Sines in the 88th place. A total of 1,67M TEU handled in 2017 allowed Sines to climb three positions over 2016 results, while remaining the15th Container Terminal in Europe. In fact, in 2017 the Sines’ Container Terminal registered a 10.3% increase over 2016, thus corresponding to 42% of the total handled by the port.
Notwithstanding the excellent results achieved by containerized cargo in 2017, the first quarter of 2018 registered an 18% decrease on the Port of Sines’ total handling volumes.
Some external factors, such as the severe weather conditions affecting this area (and the country as a whole) during last March, hindered the performing of some port operations, thus contributing for a decrease in the handling of all types of cargo.
Nevertheless, and despite the unfavorable influence of the technical outage of some industrial units of the Sines’ complex, the harsh weather conditions or even the variations on the market’s demand and consumption, port activity is expected to recover during 2018.
