On the first nine months of the year the Port of Sines registered a homologous growth of 20,9%, with a total handling of 33,3 million tons. The increase on the handling of all cargo segments contributed to this result, with a more substantial contribution of Dry Bulk and Liquid Bulk, growing 35,7% and 24,8%, respectively. General Cargo also increased 11,7%, mainly due to containerized cargo and new types of cargo handled at the Multipurpose Terminal, highlighting the beginning of the handling of livestock.

In what concerns containerized cargo, 1.022.381 TEUs (Twenty-foot equivalent unit) were handled on the same period, representing a growth of 10,3% over the previous year.

Also noteworthy the increase in the number of ships, over 8%, as well as the significant increase on the associated GT (gross tonnage), over 14%. The increasing traffic of the ULCS - Ultra Large Container Ships has been contributing to the achievement of these results, enhanced by the reception of the largest ships in operation worldwide, belonging to the 2M alliance (MSC + Maersk).
