On September 10 started an unprecedented operation with livestock, which included the export of about 3,650 cattle, with provenance mainly from Alentejo region.
The operation took place under the responsibility of PortSines, the Multipurpose Terminal of Sines (TMS) concessionaire, in compliance with all phytosanitary and customs rules applicable to this special operation, using for this purpose the vessel “Hostein Express”. The handle of live cattle towards export will take about 48 hours, after which the vessel departs to the port of Haifa in Israel.
The “Hostein Express” is a specialized vessel type – “livestock carrier”, built in Japan and owned by the Dutch company “VROON – BRESKENS”. It is 110 meters long and 20 meters wide. The call at Sines had the company “Wilhelmsen Ships Services” as shipping agent, with “Iberolinhas Transport, Ltd” for cargo agency, with the logistical support of Sitank.
The TMS began its operation in 1992 as a public service concession to PortSines and it is geared for the handling of dry bulk, general cargo and ro-ro. It offers depths up to 18 meters ZH and can receive vessels up to 190,000 tones DWT. The connection with the hinterland, which includes the region of Alentejo and southern Spain, it’s served by rail and road.
This unprecedented operation took part of TMS’ versatility and excellent conditions to receive a very wide range of vessels and cargo. It should be noted that this terminal has an area available for future projects of 43,700 m2 and has the advantage of being contiguous to the ZALSines in order to support logistics and customs operations.
